Dined at a great restaurant on your way down I-95 lately? Maybe you've grabbed a bite at a nice little diner. We would love to hear about it! Just use this form. This forum is dedicated to all those road warriors who have found or are looking for that perfect stop along America's East Coast Main Street... I-95!
The Millhouse Steakhouse is an excellent find. I had Rainbow Trout; my sister had Ahi Tuna, both of which were excellent. The bread they served was great with two different dipping sauces. The steaks and other meals we saw looked excellent also. It is located just off I-95, exit 38 at the Holiday Inn in Brunswick, GA. I would definitely make this stop again.
As Canadians, we rarely get to enjoy a good BBQ’d pork sandwich…. well try Choo-Choo BBQ at this exit. It is truly beyond good, it is an excellent sandwich. Simple location, a BBQ house, a gift and Georgia peanut shop and a Shell gas station. What more do you need? Believe me, we look forward to the stop on our twice a year pilgrimage to Naples, Florida.
How about the Georgia Pig? We stop there every time we head down I-95 on the way to Florida. It’s a little BBQ joint about 1/4 mile east of I-95 at Exit 29 in Southern Georgia. It’s the best BBQ on earth, period.
If you’re looking for a change from the fast-food, eat and run stop, try Denny’s. There’s all kinds of them from Virginia to Florida and many are located just off the exits.
For roughly the same price as a fast-food joint, you get to sit down and take a break and be waited on. One nice thing about Denny’s is no matter which one you visit, the menus and prices are all the same. You can get a full breakfast or lunch for under $5, or a respectable dinner for well under $10. It’s not the Ritz but not too shabby for the price.
Traveling south along I-95 on our way through Georgia at exit 49 we stumbled upon Smokey Joe’s BBQ tucked in between two hotels. It’s a little log cabin looking bbq joint with excellent bbq pork sandwich chopped with a choice of 2 bbq sauces you put on your self and priced at $5.50. It comes with 1 side. We chose the sweet potato fries that were really good. It comes with sweet cinnamon butter. The sweet tea was great and the kids meals were around $3.50. The turkey was good also and came with 1 side.
This place was very clean! We will definately be stopping here again and are planning on making it a regular stop on our way through. We live in south Florida and our pork sandwiches don’t even come close to tasting this good!
Shorty’s BBQ is a tiny red stand tucked between a BP and a Wendy’s just off I-95, 2 miles after (or before) you cross the Florida border. Lots of BBQ joints in Georgia get more notoriety, but this one is the best. Just get a simple pork sandwich, pure chopped pork on a bun with just the right amount (not too much) sauce. The sandwich must weigh about half a pound and the price is extremely reasonable. And while you’re enjoying it, laugh at the majority of folks who are pulling into Wendy’s next door for the same bland burgers they eat at home. You can get NOTHING like Shorty’s at home. And don’t forget a tall cold cup of GREAT sweet tea to wash this beauty down!
Popeye’s Chicken and Biscuit restaurants are few and far between up here in New England, but every time we travel south on I-95 we make it a point to stop at a Popeye’s at least once. Specializing in New Orleans-style chicken, Popeye’s is the world’s second-largest quick-service chicken chain. We love it! It’s got KFC beat by a mile!
Choo-Choo BBQ is located in Waverly (Brunswick). My husband and I started stopping at Choo-Choo BBQ about 20 years ago. It’s the best BBQ and best BBQ sauce we have ever had. I would love to get the phone number to Choo-Choo for their BBQ sauce.
Matteos is located just off I-95 next to the Best Western. We usually make Brunswick a regular stop on our way to Florida and have eaten at Matteos several times. The food is great here… a lot like home cooking and the portions are generous. It’s a little unusual to find good Italian food down this way, especially right of an exit. I’m fairly sure that the restaurant is family owned and operated. The staff has been friendly and accommodating every time we have visited.
Their menu has is quite varied with something for everyone. They have a large selection of authentic Italian dishes… including pizza, which is also very good. If it’s around meal time and we’re near Brunswick, we make it a point to stop here. I recommend it to all I-95 travelers!
For shellfish lovers this place is a must! It is the Shell House in Savannah, Georgia. It is right off of I-95 exit 16, when you get off the interstate go west for a couple of hundred feet and make a right. It is in a small area with one of the many motels in the area. It opens a 4 P. M. and time my trips so I can have my dinner there. The portions are tremendous and the food is great. Every table has an opening in the center to toss your garbage into. The service is very good and the staff is very friendly. If you plan on spending the night in the area there are at least seven or eight motels there plus a nice outlet shopping center.
